Ingress Protection EZ Test Plan Templates

Ingress Protection EZ Test Plan Templates

Ingress Protection EZ-Test Plan Templates are licensed for one year and are renewable.  These Test Plan Templates provide essential documentation to ensure that repeatable testing is performed as required and that adequate data is collected for analysis and product validation.  These Test Plans have been developed for IEC 60529 Degrees of Protection Provided by Enclosures.

The Ingress Protection EZ Test Plan templates for IEC 60529 Compliance include appendices for documentation of product to be tested operational requirements and operational testing for verification of function during and after ingress testing. We have incorporated lessons we learned while program managing and witnessing tests on commercial parts.

Each Ingress Protection EZ Test Plan incorporates options for both operational and storage types of testing procedures and the requisite parameters. Each Ingress Protection EZ Test Plans template is compliant with MIL-STD-810 Task 405 to provide an optimal format for ensuring exact execution of the procedure and that all relevant data is recorded for analysis.

IEC 60529 Ingress Protection Code (IP Code)

The International Electrotechnical Commision created standard 60529 in 1998 to create a consistent classification of degrees of protection provided by electrical equipment enclosures.  This includes protection against access of persons to hazardous parts inside the enclosure, protection of equipment by ingress of solid objects, and protection of equipment from the ingress of water.

Each of these classifications has a requisite test methodology for verification of compliance.  Degrees of protection  are designated by the IP Code.  The code is comprised of the code letter IP (International Protection) followed by two characteristic numerals and two optional letters.

First Characteristic Numeral

The first characteristic numeral defines levels of protection of equipment against the ingress of solid foreign objects.  This would include the ingress of dust and harmful effects of conductive materials introduced though orifices.  The numbers 1 – 6 are used.  The number 0 defines a non protected enclosure.

  1. 50 mm diameter
  2. 12.5 mm diameter
  3. 2.5 mm diameter
  4. 1.0 mm diameter
  5. Dust-Protected
  6. Dust-Tight

Second Characteristic Number

The second characteristic numeral defines levels of protection of equipment against the ingress of water.  This includes dripping, splashing, and sprayed water.  Additional test parameters are assigned for various methods water jet cleaning ingress protection testing and immersion testing.  The numbers 1 – 9 are used.  The number 0 defines a non protected enclosure.

  1. Vertically dripping
  2. Dripping (15° tilted)
  3. Spraying
  4. Splashing
  5. Jetting
  6. Powerful jetting
  7. Temporary Immersion
  8. Continuous Immersion
  9. High Pressure and Temperature Water Jet

Additional Letter Optional

The first additional letter adds detail to solid foreign object ingress.

  • A = Back of Hand
  • B = Finger
  • C = Tool
  • D = Wire

Supplementary Letter

  • H = High Voltage Apparatus
  • M = Motion during water test
  • S = Stationary during water test
  • W = Weather Conditions

CVG Strategy

CVG Strategy offers our Ingress Protection EZ Test Plan to ensure your testing will be conducted in accordance with IEC 60529 and it will help you qualify that a system can survive in its application and be reliable.

Commercial Testing to qualify a product for IP65, IP67 and IP68 can be a challenge, as IEC 60529, is not a freely available standard.  A licensed copy must be purchased from the International Electro-Technical Commission.

CVG Strategy has decades of experience in design and testing of equipment for ingress protection ratings.  We can perform analysis of designs and provide recommendations for modifications.  We understand the challenges involved in creating solutions that include EMI/EMC, climatic, dynamic, and chemical requirements.
